Moving in!

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
There's activity at the mouth of a burrow that's been long abandoned; somebody is pulling out old rubbish, shoring up any weak spots, and moving in a few odds and ends from a wheelbarrow. Sleeves rolled up and grumbling softly to himself, an old badger is hard at work getting himself moved in. Being an older fellow, he does take the occasional break to catch his breath and bask in the sun, and he's not wholly unapproachable.

On her way down a dusty path Primrose hears the ruckus of someone doing quite a bit of work on an old barrow. Now, most might assume a lone wandering hen might keep her distance, but most have a very faulty sense of the fortitude of chickens.

Gingerly she picks her way closer, pecking experimentally at a few things scattered about before calling out to whomever and whatever might be making all that noise. "Excuse me!" A pause, head tilted to listen. "Are you moving in today?"

Primrose it's rude to shout at a noisy barrow don't you know?
mr_blackbriar: (friendly)

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-22 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
In short order she's greeted with a black-and-white face thrust out of the shadows of the doorway, and close behind it a badger of not insignificant size and girth. There's a scar over one eye, and possibly some grey hairs in his muzzle, and the slightly grumpy expression is quick to resolve into something friendlier, but without the sly cunning deceit of a predator. "I am. D'you live nearby, then?"
thegreenway: (Default)

[personal profile] thegreenway 2015-03-22 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness. He certainly is a large badger, and were she any lesser bird she may have considered a hasty retreat. She did stand taller, arching up her neck to give the impression of more size than might have been entirely factual, although Brahmas were quite hefty in their own right.

He seemed friendly enough on first glance. "I don't, I was passing through and heard the ruckus, thought I'd come have a gander. Quite the lovely looking little town isn't it?"
mr_blackbriar: (with poppies)

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-22 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
He's getting on in years a bit, and has been successful enough in life to be fairly large, but he's not exactly fast anymore, either. A chicken is a bit beyond anything he aspires to take on, these days, although the thought of a ready supply of eggs is lingering in the back of his mind, now. When she fluffs and straightens up, he makes no effort in return, but does trundle out a little further and sits, dusting off his front claws. He's been busy clearing out the place, and digging a little wherever needs expanding.

"I made a ruckus? Begging your pardon, then. Part of why I moved out of the old neighborhood." He continues on dusting off his vest front, and pulls out a pair of spectacles to get a better look at her. "It is lovely. Quiet and peaceful... I'll do my best not to make too much fuss and bother moving in. Seems a terrible way to meet the neighbors, by disturbing them."
thegreenway: (Primrose crop)

[personal profile] thegreenway 2015-03-22 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
There may be some trades to make in the future, should Primrose decide to settle here for a time. Eggs for burrowing help, perhaps? She's enjoyed her time travelling, but it grows tiring after a few seasons. Satisfied that he isn't considering making a meal out of her she settles back down, fluffing out her feathers more comfortably.

"Oh it's no bother to me, merely curious. Digging will do that after all. I couldn't say if any of the others even heard. Are there many burrows available, did you notice as you passed through?"
mr_blackbriar: (friendly)

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-22 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
He would not turn down eggs, ever, and burrowing and digging do come second nature to him. Sitting down, dusting off his vest, every signal he gives off is peaceful and contented and non-threatening. He looks old, fat, and slow, but the scar above his eye hints at his fighting ability in the past. She can relax, his mind is on domestic matters right now, but it may not be wise to misjudge him.

"Should be mostly done now. It's just there was a minor cave-in or two, and some old rubbish to be dragged out." He'll be glad to settle in to the easier business of arranging furniture and putting on a pot of tea. "I did see a fair few... can't say what happened to empty 'em out, everyone moving to other places until they're busier and noisier, mayhaps." He clearly disapproves.

[personal profile] thegreenway 2015-04-13 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There's bound to be an interesting story behind that scar, and if there's one thing Primrose loves as much as gardening, it's a good story. Confident the badger is no threat to her, she's content to let her attention wander about the scenery. He's found himself quite a lovely burrow here, and the weather is just perfect for a moving day. Of course one eye never completely leaves him, comfortable as he may appear she isn't an oblivious old hen. Tempers can change in a heartbeat.

Hah, this old badger does like his peace and quiet. She lets out a few approving clucks at the sentiment. "Hmm, perhaps. I am Primrose by the way, Primrose Greenleaf. Might as well introduce myself if we may end up being neighbors, right?"
mr_blackbriar: (friendly)

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-04-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
He just might be coaxed into story-telling, over a pot of tea, once he's properly settled in. Under the right circumstances, a badger can make a very good neighbor indeed. It's best not to wander about at night when he's out hunting, and all's fair in desperate times if there's a food shortage, but when life is easy and the world is blooming, he's a useful digger and a warning to any other predators in the area.

"Tadge Blackbriar. Are you looking for a burrow, then? I thought hens lived... other places." Come to that, he's not quite sure where chickens do live, if not in a coop on human property. A truly free-range chicken is something of a novelty.

[personal profile] little_thousand 2015-03-22 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
After a while, the badger may sense a pair of eyes watching him, despite the fact that no one's spoken or made any kind of audible approach. It may take a minute of looking around to determine the origin of the gaze, in fact, because the gazer is well-hidden in the undergrowth.

It's just a rabbit. Undersized, probably young, big-eyed and wary. He's perfectly still, but not in the way that a rabbit frozen in terror would be. It's a safe bet he recognizes the badger as potential trouble, but he seems to be sizing up, rather than freaking out.

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-22 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Domestic preparations are a little further along, by then, and while he's still taking in furniture, it seems like a good time for a break. The big fat badger pauses with a huff of a sigh, putting his spectacles on and giving a quick glance around, then trundles back inside for a few minutes. He approves of quiet neighbors, but he's not sure he likes to be spied on.

When he does come back out, it's with a tray, and he settles to sit in the sun with a pot of tea and a plate of some kind of sweet-smelling root vegetables made into cookies. There seem to be two cups, and two smaller plates, and settling back against some tree roots with his eyes half closed he looks as approachable as he can. He's sunbathing, now, taking a well-deserved rest from the work of moving in.

Tea and cups and cookies. It's all very odd, but somehow familiar nonetheless. And Fiver can't count over the number of paws on his body, plus one, but he can see there are two of everything, and draw some conclusions.

Hesitantly, he emerges, shaking leaves off his back. He sits up, grooms a couple burrs out of his ears, and hops closer. "Is that an invitation? I didn't intend to be rude. I apologize."

It's safer to be polite, now that he knows he's been seen. Also those cookies smell good.
mr_blackbriar: (with poppies)

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-22 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is." The old badger's eyelids lift just a little, but he still looks slightly drowsy. It's the sun, and the morning's work taking its toll. "I prefer to meet my neighbors face to face." He does give the little rabbit a slightly arch look, but it's good humored. "Have a sit, and some tea. It's too pleasant a day not to enjoy it."
little_thousand: (blink)

[personal profile] little_thousand 2015-03-22 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're not edible to as many creatures as I am," he explains mildly, but he does sit, and grooms his paws briefly before tentatively reaching for a teacup. He knows how to use it, but handles it clumsily. Hopefully he won't spill.

"My name is Fiver. I come from the downs. Did you just move here?"
mr_blackbriar: (friendly)

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-22 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"...No, I suppose not. But cookies and tea are the menu for this afternoon." He suspects this rabbit, small though he is, could outrun him easily. That alone makes him less appealing. Also it truly is a pleasant afternoon, and he's not interested in anything but having a pleasant break for tea, and getting his things settled in the burrow by dusk.

"Still moving in, technically. The old neighborhood got too noisy. I didn't know there was a warren nearby..." Rabbits make for fairly quiet neighbors, so he's not bothered about it if there is.
little_thousand: (blink)

[personal profile] little_thousand 2015-03-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not too far, but the climb is steep." And hopefully that's enough to discourage marauding. Not that this badger looks like much of a hunter--but everyone has to eat, sooner or later.

Maybe he could just...encourage him to continue to focus on cookies and tea. "My brother is our chief."
mr_blackbriar: (friendly)

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a badger who's eating well for the time being, and prefers to get food that doesn't require more effort than necessary. Of course, in leaner times, necessary measures can be different, but right now it's spring and things will only get easier. Cookies and tea suit him just fine, as long as they last.

"You must be the adventurous sort, then. Is it a peaceful area, here? Not a lot of noise or trouble?" He'd be content with news of the area, really. He's still settling in and wants to be sure he's picked a decent place.

Although owls are known to be nocturnal creatures, the truth is that they are just mostly nocturnal. Occasionally, they go out in the daylight. They are also known to have extremely good hearing, and, the increased bustle about Brakbre has caught this barn owl's attention. Soon enough, he feels the need to go fly about and find out what has been going on. When he spies a nicely-dressed, civilized-looking badger with a wheelbarrow, he swoops down and settles himself on the lowest branch of a nearby tree.

"A good day to you, sir!" He greets the badger in a rather sibilant, rasping voice (for barn owls do not hoot, and are naturally blessed/cursed with a range of vocalizations that often help to assure a minimum of unwanted human visitors in their chosen domain). "And a busy one at that- it's been a while since I've heard so much activity. I presume you are taking up residence here?"

Badgers are known for nocturnal wanderings, themselves, but they're to be found out and about at all hours too. Except that there hasn't been one in this area for some time, so he does stand out. He's a fairly large specimen, both in general size and girth, with just a hint of grey about the muzzle and a long scar running up from one eye. He dusts off his claws and straightens, squinting a little and light glinting off a pair of spectacles as he glances upwards for the source of the voice. The sett he's been moving his furniture into is just under a tree and some rocky outcroppings, roots helping to frame the doorway.

"I am, and it's my understanding I'm not the only one new to these parts. I trust that's not a problem, though?" His own voice is a low and rumbly contrast.

"Certainly not. It will be pleasant to have some new neighbors." The waistcoat-clad owl examines the portly badger through his brass-rimmed monocle, adding with a tone of approval, "Especially ones who appear to have good, civilized tastes. Welcome, sir, to Brakbre."

He flutters down from the branch to be at a more conversational level compared to the badger- although 'fluttering' might be a somewhat inaccurate term given the muffled silence of his descent. He bobs his head with a sage nod, stating, "You have chosen a fine location here. I hope it will work out well for you." He offers a wing in the style of a handshake, introducing himself. "I am Lord Alastair Greywick, master of Greywick Manor- it is the estate that stands in the oak copse over yonder." He extends his other wing to indicate the general direction of the old, abandoned farmhouse he calls his 'manor'.

Welcomed by the local lord, and he's a little undecided how he feels about that yet. He's a fairly civilized badger, in his way, but he bears no titles and is of a very practical and workmanlike bent of mind. On the other hand, he reads, as much as he possibly can, and he's often in want of somebody to discuss more esoteric thoughts with. Perhaps lordship comes with an intellectual education. Another dusting off of his claws, and he trundles over to give a slightly awkward sort of handshake, claw to feathers. "My apologies, I'm a bit dusty and mucky with the moving..." He's long since cast off his coat to hang over the back of a chair, loosened his tie, and rolled up his sleeves, but he's kept his own waistcoat on. He's not sure what the owl's standards are.

"Tadge Blackbriar, and I've moved about a bit. This place does seem lovely though, and more peaceful than the last neighborhood." There's a trace of something Northern in his accent, but it's muddled and he doesn't truly sound Scottish. Squinting a little again, he casts his gaze after the pointing, and tilts his head to look over the rims of his spectacles. "And it looks a fine place, but I haven't ventured out that way yet..." There is the unspoken knowledge that their interests in food may overlap a bit, and he's wary of overstepping, now.

Re: Moving in!

[personal profile] lord_greywick 2015-03-26 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Although he styles himself as a Lord, this is an entirely self-bestowed title, which Alastair felt fitting upon the acquisition of his 'manor'- a fact that Mr. Blackbriar is likely to discover in time. It is important, after all, to bear a proper title when one is the holder of an estate. Good manners and quality conversation are of far more importance to this owl than any sort of official breeding of nobility, and Mr. Blackbriar certainly appears to be well-mannered. And, a bit of dust never actually hurt anyone, although Lord Greywick does prefer to avoid it. He is, however, an understanding sort. "No need to apologize, good sir- such is only to be expected after the hard work of moving in. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr. Blackbriar." His accent is clearly that of an English gentleman of proper upbringing.

"I think you'll find Brakbre a good place in which to settle down. I've never felt the need to move since taking up my place at Greywick Manor- you shall have to stop by sometime soon, for tea. And perhaps, a game of chess- do you play?" He sounds hopeful, as it has been some time since he has had a regular chess partner. He also suspects that they are likely to share other interests in common. Perhaps Mr. Blackbriar could also become a future hunting partner? A badger could be quite effective at flushing out a warren of small rodents, while a waiting barn owl silently swooped them up. . .

Re: Moving in!

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-26 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
A discussion of hunting tactics is probably best carried on somewhere more private, where there's no chance of little mouse or rabbit ears picking up on it, but the old badger definitely looks like he's efficient at getting his meals. He wouldn't be opposed to a mutually beneficial arrangement... In the meantime, there's a trace of a smile and a surprised tilt of the head. "Chess? Oh, it's been a while, you'll have to go easy on me the first game." A badger's face is not designed for expressiveness, but his voice is rich with amusement. They just may get along quite well indeed.

"If your lordship would give me a day or two to finish moving in properly, I wouldn't mind a visit at all. I'd invite you in for tea myself, but I'm not certain my own home is quite as inviting to... feathered folk?" Few birds like the idea of going down a tunnel in the dirt, in his experience, no matter how well-appointed and clean he keeps his home.

Re: Moving in!

[personal profile] lord_greywick 2015-03-26 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The lordly owl is pleased to hear that his new acquaintance is familiar with the game of chess, and gives an agreeable bob of his head. "I'll be looking forward to a game- and, it's been a while since I've had someone to play with myself. Not since old Mr. Coalfeathers met with an unfortunate accident the winter before last. . ." He sounds a bit sad about this incident, whatever it was, but does not linger on the subject. "I may be a bit rusty myself, and it will be good to get back in proper practice."

Although some owls are pleased to live in burrows, Lord Greywick is not at all like these diminutive cousins, and does prefer to be somewhere far less enclosed than a tunnel in the ground. However, he is not one to rudely dismiss the idea of hospitality, replying, "I would not wish to get in your way while you're busy moving in, but I would indeed be inclined to pay a visit in the future- perhaps we could take tea here out front some night when the weather allows it." Some night, because according to Lord Greywick, teatime is after midnight. "And do feel free to stop by anytime, once you're settled in- I typically take tea at precisely 3 o'clock. I expect the front door is a bit inconveniently located for most four-legged folk, but you can ring at the back door." If Mr. Blackbriar were to call at Greywick Manor, he would find that the 'back' door is a small door set into the old, decrepit front porch, nicely marked with a small sign stating "PRIVATE PROPERTY. NO SOLICITING, PLEASE."

Re: Moving in!

[personal profile] mr_blackbriar 2015-03-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only is he four legged, but they're all on the short and stout side. Large a badger as he is, his kind is built very low to the ground when on all fours, perfect for tunnels, not so well suited to stairs and aeries. He nods a little, musing, and doesn't bother to ask if he means 3 in the afternoon or the morning. He'd be as comfortable with either one, himself, and intends to call on the owl at night at least the first time, since that seems more polite. "A picnic tea would be lovely, but I'll come round a few nights from now, if you don't mind. I'm not certain I have a chess set myself anymore, anyway." The trouble with moving house is everything gets all jostled around until one no longer knows where anything is. He's a fussy sort of housekeeper, so that annoys him no end, but the neighborhood he left was evidently bad enough to be worth the trouble of moving.

"We can be rusty together, but a few games ought to get us both back into good practice, enh? You don't... read much, by any chance?" He was only looking for peace and quiet, but to find somebody with shared interests and appetites is more than he dared hope for.
